Does anyone know the name of the boats used in hawaii for funerals?

in hawaii they have these "barbie" sized boats that they use in funeral ceremonies. they put the person's possessions on it as well as their ashes and then send them out to sea and burn them. I remember people doing this when i lived in Hawaii, but i'm not sure if it is a Hawaiian tradition or maybe a Japanese tradition...please help...i need to learn where to buy one.|||It's Japanese. During July - Obon festival time - you float small boats with food as an offering to your ancestors. Not intentionally burned but usually the boats have candles. The boats either burn or sink in the waves. They're called lantern boats.|||It's a Japanese tradition. Try EBay|||I'm sure sure which cultural started it but I know that hawaiians don't do stuff like that. Hawaiians believe that a person's mana (life spirit) resides in everything that a person touches or uses on a daily basis so burning it would essentially kill that person's spirit.

With your description of a barbie sized boat, it sounds more like it's an asian custom (maybe japanese or okinawan).

Good luck!
