There is a boat near my house that the owner told me hasn't been in the water in two years. What should I look for to know that I am buying a decent boat. It has an inboard motor so I want to make sure it runs before I even think about working on this boat, How would I do that. And lastly I want to make sure the trailer is drivable and safe, What should I do and look for to check? How do I check to see if a used boat is worth buying?
Compression test the motor (the motor has to be started and warmed up to operating temp to perform this test). If PSI isn't about the same on all cylinders (within 5% or so), walk away.
If it has an outdrive, and the owner starts the engine without supplying water to the lower unit, walk away (it only takes a few seconds dry running to ruin a water pump).
If you live in a jurisdiction that issues titles for boats, and there's not a lienholder, and the owner doesn't have the title in hand, walk away.
If all those work out, make the owner take you to the lake for a test drive. When you get there, feel the trailer hubs -- they shouldn't even be warm.
The motor should start quickly (cold and warm), idle smoothly, accelerate without stalling and cruise at full throttle without problems.
It won't of course, because evaporating gasoline leaves behind a varnish in the carburetors. It should still start quickly, anyway.
But you need the lake test to see how badly it leaks around the outdrive.
go out there tonight and run a water hoe to it fill it half way . come back in 2 days and see if it held the water .How do I check to see if a used boat is worth buying?
well ask the manager how much it is and when he states then price shoot him in the leg and the say "now how much is"...."its free!!"...lol
All kinds of things to look at.
It's best if you take someone who is knowledgable about boats with you to check it out.How do I check to see if a used boat is worth buying?
jtexas gave you a great answer so heed it please.
You also have the right to have the vessel gone over by a marine surveyor. This would cost you a couple of hundred but it's definitely well worth the investment. They check structural integrity of the boat (bottom, sides, transom, etc) and a list of things much too long to list here. You can find them in the yellow pages or on the intranet.
But...even with the marine survey you still want to take the boat for a test drive. Do not settle for a start up in the driveway for that won't show that she can accelerate and get up and go.
Go luck!

Are Pontoon boats used for water skiing?
Yes they can be, I can get up behind my pontoon it's a 24ft with a 90hp on it and it pulls me just fine either on two skis or slalom and I not a little guy either (6' 3'' 185lbs). But that being said I wouldn't say it's the ideal boat for water skiing. Are Pontoon boats used for water skiing?
You can use them although the wake is lame, and they don't go very fast. It can take a while to get up on the skies considering a pontoon's acceleration is poor. I have seen it been done. You would need a 100 hp engine or greater on it though.
not tipicaly but you could.
you can have a 75 hp motor pull you for sure
its all about your prop and the way you enegin is tunned.
itll work
taker easy bro.Are Pontoon boats used for water skiing?
Nope. Too slow and then when you have to go get the person after they fall or are done it takes a while...
bad choice. o.k. for tubing. Are Pontoon boats used for water skiing?
no man they are too slow most of the time

I bought a used boat. It has a torn boot around the lower unit. How do I know which boot kit to buy?
The inboard is a 4 cylinder chevy engine that has been rebuilt and runs great. I don't know what type of lower end is on the boat so I don't know which boot kit to buy. Is there someplace on the lowere unit that will tell me, or do I just measure the hole?I bought a used boat. It has a torn boot around the lower unit. How do I know which boot kit to buy?
the "boot" is outdrive specific. you need to find out which one you have. mercruiser, volvo, yamaha, or omc. if you could post a pic someone would know. we also need more info on boat.I bought a used boat. It has a torn boot around the lower unit. How do I know which boot kit to buy?
Depending how old the outdrive is but I assume you have an older boat
If the engine is a chevy then in most cases it is mercruiser or omc
Mercruisers have mostly been black, if the anti-vent plate above the prop is round curved it it a MR. if edged alfa1 .
(older) Volvo pentas are white and have no through prop exhaust. eighter has omc but has a typical round outdrive shape and uses a transome boot in round or square type.
according to your "measure the hole" i think you have an omc
I have heard that the round type transome boot is difficult to get your hands on.I bought a used boat. It has a torn boot around the lower unit. How do I know which boot kit to buy?
Look at the registration of this boat. Hopefully it will give you some information on the manufacture of the boat. It's critical to have the correct boot installed or it will leak badly. Ask the previous owner or take it to a marina and ask them. Also, find the serial number on the out drive and use this number when ordering parts. Different years have different boots. The serial number will also tell you what year it was built. Go to "iboats.com" and search their forum under out drive parts and info. Very helpful info and they also sell part reasonably
Good luck.

How to determine the condition of a used fiberglass hull?
I've been looking for a used boat for a while. I've recently come across one that seems like a good deal. The one issue with it is that it is old (1977)
With regard to the hull condition, what should I look for that would be a deal-breaker?How to determine the condition of a used fiberglass hull?
If this is big money you want a professional survey. Before you spend that money do a couple of things. Looking at the hull from angle to create a "horizon." Walk along each side watching for abrupt changes in the line that will indicate dents, repairs, or other "stresses." Do an exam for blisters. If they are present break a few and see if things are ugly underneath. Finally, using a plastic headed hammer or the handle of a screwdriver, tap the hull, especially around any fittings. If the hull is sound you will get a "sharp" return sound. If moisture is present the return will be "dull." The general opinion is walk away from a hull problem.
You might also do a web search for info concerning the boat. Often there are owner's groups with forums and in a short time you can pick up a pattern on particular problems or join and ask. There are books, of course. Hulls are often not a problem with older boats as they were heavily glassed although blisters are not uncommon and can be treated. Later hulls were cored with a lightweight material sandwiched between layers of glass. If this is wet it is a large problem. How to determine the condition of a used fiberglass hull?
Don't write it off because it's old- sometimes, like with a fiberglass boat, that can be a good thing. I'm not sure if blisters were a problem back then, but check for them. There weren't too many cored hulls- avoid them like the plague unless you KNOW they're good. A solid glass hull can be professionally repaired as good and strong as new. Check for separated bulkheads, separated keel joint (keel bolts if you have them), hull to deck joint (don't want THAT leaking) deck condition (cored decks- jump around and see if they squish), and mast step area (compressed to the point of damage?). To be sure, you can have a survey performed (Your own surveyor- don't use theirs). How to determine the condition of a used fiberglass hull?
hull can be repaired..make sure there aren't any soft spots in the floor, and that old repairs aren't hiding any hole throughs....take your oldest clothes and climb under it and look on the trailer...never buy a boat you can't see in dry dock.....mopar

The seller has to pull that $1000 out of his pocket.

Where can I find a used hydraulic boat trailer?
I'm looking for a used hydraulic boat trailer that will move a boat up to 28' and 10,000# approx. Does anyone know where I can find one, cash in hand. I found a few that are too big, looking for one that is comparable in size to a Hostar 2800 but I will buy and modify a larger unit if the price is right.Where can I find a used hydraulic boat trailer?
I"ve seen some parked in the weeds at marinas that no longer use them. The question I have is where are you. They might take a lot of work to make serviceable.

What should i ask when buying a used boat?
what should i ask when buying a used 2006 searay 44' sundancer. i live in Florida and im looking at two, one in south carolina and one in minnesotaWhat should i ask when buying a used boat?
Freshwater or saltwater? Not for the MN boat, but ask closed or open cooling system.
Hours on the engines?
Regular maintenance?
Extras? Electronics.
Why are you selling?
I have a million questions to give you.
Are you a boat owner now?
Want me to take a look at the Minnesota boat? I live in the "Land of 10,000 Lakes"
You should ask when your surveyor can look at the boat.
Hire a competant marine surveyor that specializes in these types of evaluations. A good surveyor will tell you any issues with the boat, which you can then use to re-negotiate or walk away. Be smart and hire a marine surveyor.
good luck! What should i ask when buying a used boat?
Ask you surveyor how much he is going to charge you first then base your questions to the owner on what the surveyor finds.

How old is too old for a used motor boat?
Is a 21 year old boat too old to consider buying used?
The interior is replaced and body is fine, but don't know about the engine. Will the engine be too much cost to rebuild to be worth it?How old is too old for a used motor boat?
My boat is 31 years old, the motor is 32. The engine OEM and several aftermarket suppliers still support it with parts, and fiberglass is forever. I've redone 1/2 the interior, the other half is in good shape.
The weak spot in the hull is the transom. Transoms can be replaced but it's a *major* project which, for an old boat is not economically prudent unless you do it yourself. Any soft wood in the transom means it's a goner.
A 21 year old motor would probably be more economical to replace with, say, a 15 year old motor, than to rebuild unless you do it yourself.
Depends on how well the boat has been taken care of all of its life. I own a 1984 242 ls Formula and it is in better shape than most boats that are only 2 years old. It is immaculate from bow to stern.
I did have to replace the old 5.7 liter engine (MerCruiser) a few years ago because that got tired...
But it has some serious horsepower now, and it is well taken care of, and well worth the work if you have money to spend on something like that. How old is too old for a used motor boat?
Age is not as important as how well it has ben maintained.I would look for cracks in the hull, transom area for rot and cracks.Just look for any structural weakness. If it looks good buy it.As far as the engine.Make sure "hard parts" are still available before you make your final decision.
Most people down boats because of engine problems. Price that first.
Older engines can leave you stranded. Play the jaws music. How old is too old for a used motor boat?
My sailboat is a 1981, the 10 hp engine is 1984. I trust all systems with my life.

What kind of boats were used to bomb the USS Cole in 200 killing 17 US soldiers?
For one you mean Sailors..and two the boats were rigid hulled inflatable boats. Just like the ones you can go to any boat store and buy and the same models that the Harbor Pilot and Security team patroled in the harbor, that is why the ship's security team did not fire because they believed it was the harbor pilot or harbor security making rounds. What kind of boats were used to bomb the USS Cole in 200 killing 17 US soldiers?

Many people forget that we didn't know who was responsible for the Cole bombing until February of 2001. I wonder why Bush didn't go after Al Queda, or at least hold an anti-terror cabinet meeting when it was determined they were responsible.

What is the cheapest place to buy a used 4.3liter mercruiser with a bravo outdrive?
I know boat salvage yards, or used boat dealers is a good place to start. Just wondering if it is a better idea to try to get an engine out of a newer model car or a wrecked boat? I think the downfall is the car engine isnt marine grade and has different cams, heads, and intakes. One downfall of getting an engine from a boat salvage yard would be that many of the engines in salvage have been submerged. What is the cheapest place to buy a used 4.3liter mercruiser with a bravo outdrive?
You have answered your own question. Converting an automotive block to marine is much more work, you can buy a remanufactred short block for about $1800. Just a note, the Bravo drive is not designed for a 4.3, you should be looking at an Alpha drive.magellan roadmate

How are boats using sails able to return to their starting place?
All those boats using a sail and traveling upwind, like the old time galleys using a sail, once they reach their destination how are they able to return to where they came from? How are boats using sails able to return to their starting place?
It's called "tacking."
It would be easier to explain to you if I could draw a picture. Think of the sail as an air foil. When the wind blows straight from the boat, (front,) the sail will luff, (flap.) However, if you turn slightly to one side or the other the sail will fill with air and start moving forward. The best point of sail is what's called a "close reach" or "close haul." That is when the wind is 30-60 degrees off the bow of the boat blowing toward you. You actually go faster trimmed, (set up,) this way than if you were "running" which is with the wind directly at your back.
Understanding this, you maneuver the boat in a zig-zag manner, (tacking,) into the wind. There's whats called a "beam reach," which is with the wind at 90 degrees off port, (left,) or starboard, (right,) and "broad reach" where you have either a right of left quartering tailwind.
Here is an excellent site that will explain it in much more detail. http://www.sailingusa.info/sail_trim.htm
You should try sailing sometime. For my money sailing beats out speed boating any day, except of course on those days that there is no wind. Then you just motor out and take a swim.
1. they have outboard motors.
2. they're using tugboats. How are boats using sails able to return to their starting place?
tacking. If if a boat had to go in a straight line exactly with the wind, nobody would ever get anywhere they wanted, they would have to wait until the wind changed, and it often doesn't on oceans and so forth. However, most sailing is done at angles to the wind, and you can go just a few points off of straight upwind with proper trimming. In order to go upwind, you tack- that is, zigzag upwind. you can't go straight, but you can go against the wind at a pretty steep angle.
They don't travel up wind they travel across the wind it called tacking.Old time galleons, sail down wind. followed the trade winds that travel south to north in a circle west to east to south.I sailed for years threw the carribean. Know i have a Sportfish 48' I have spent enough time zig zaging. How are boats using sails able to return to their starting place?
Above give you the concept.
If, you would like to play and see how it works, go here;
http://www.nationalgeographic.com/volvoo鈥?/a>
It National Geographic and it a simple sailing program. You can get the feel of Running with the wind and Reaching for the wind. Well, that how I say it. ;-)
You have a Sail Control and a Rudder Control. Arrows show the direction of your wind. You can see information below like your speed. As I say, it a simple simulator to see how the boat reacts to the wind, sail position and rudder.
Downwind is going with the wind. To go against the wind they tack. Most boats can tack within 50 degrees of the wind and go back and forth across the wind making headway up wind. They also studied currents to know when to go where.

If, you would like to play and see how it works, go here;
http://www.nationalgeographic.com/volvoo鈥?/a>
It National Geographic and it a simple sailing program.
I want to buy a boat that will be used in the lake and ocean. No more than 2 miles out in the ocean. any ideas
I am new at this but it has always been a dream. I am looking to buy a boat that my family can enjoy on the lake for water skiing and fishing. But I also want to use it for boating around in my local Southern CA bays and close shore 1 to 2 miles out fishing.
Any ideas of what kind of boat to look for? I will most likely buy a used boat first.I want to buy a boat that will be used in the lake and ocean. No more than 2 miles out in the ocean. any ideas
I suggest at least 19' boat. Either have dual motors or a small kicker motor to get you home if you break down. Make sure it has a top , the sun is terribly hot on the water. Decide what you will do more of realistically. If it is fishing, get a live well and bait wells. If it is leisure boating get that type. You can always take Coolers for fish and Bait buckets for a once or twice a year fishing trip.
18 to 20' center console bay boat.
If you going offshore you might want to consider dual power.I want to buy a boat that will be used in the lake and ocean. No more than 2 miles out in the ocean. any ideas
You know it depends on how many pounds, people, and what activities you will be doing. I have owned several boats and I too buy used boats. I like Chris Crafts. I would think you would want at least a 21' no smaller. Cuddy Cabins are nice in case of bad weather or sleeping. Make sure you look out for rotted wood. Everywhere. Try Craig's List for listings in your area. There are boats listed daily. Try to get as much equipment thrown in the deal as possible. Other boats to consider are Crownline, Four Winns, Rinker, and Sea Ray.
Good Luck!
Its all about finance you know.
How much money do you want to spend?I want to buy a boat that will be used in the lake and ocean. No more than 2 miles out in the ocean. any ideas
Nothing less than 22' for the ocean, depend's if you want fishing (center console), or cruising (cuddy cabin), I only like one kind of boat "BOSTON WHALER", a Boston Whaler won't sink, that's some mighty important information you have RIGHT THERE !
first lesson. never buy a used boat until you have a licensed
surveyor inspect the boat. the cost will save you money and trouble later. for skiing you will need 150- 200 hp motor to pull adults. a family of four will need a 22-25 boat for comfort including a head and storage areas. a bimini top for shade. you can safely trailer it if your vehicle is rated for 10-12000 pounds. be sure to consider insurance. an inboard engine is an option ,but they require a lot of room in the boat. if there is a boat show in your, its a god place to see whats available.

Pratical use of automobile engines in boats ? what are the differences for rust, corrosion protection?
I'm always dreaming up wild ideas, and I had one for a new breed of high performance personal watercraft - the Tube boat. I want to put a V-8 engine into a very stretched Seadoo-type watercraft, and just use a simple propeller shaft off the back of the engine, with maybe a simple clutch mechanism to engage/disengage the power to the shaft.
Anyway, that all said, I know boats use automobile-type engines, but use special water-cooled exhaust manifolds, etc. What other Boaterizing is done to an automobile engine to make it into a "marine" engine? Any special gimmicks to prevent the corrosion of dissimilar metals inside the motor? If I chose to use a straight car engine, with the watercooled boat manifolds, how long would a motor last without any other mods? Obviously a boat style cooling system as well would be installed %26lt;duh%26gt;. So other than radiator, coolant, and exhaust manifolds, what else would normally be changed?Pratical use of automobile engines in boats ? what are the differences for rust, corrosion protection?
A marine sticker and a large increase in the price. although there are specialized marine engines that use special alloys to prevent corrosion (ie atomic 4, westerbreke diesels) most of your cheaper ski boats use a car motor core for economic reasons (ie cannot put a $10,000 marine engine into a brand new Bayliner that retails brand new for $8995)
As for your question of how long one will last, depends on the water quality ran through it, salt, sand, silt, algae all change the lifespan. Most boats die of neglect than anything else.
Although you can use an air cooled radiator in a boat,(seen it done) its easier to use the water underneath it. I would suggest a heat exchanger, that way you can add antifreeze rust inhibitors to the water going through the motor.
Boats either use a dry exhaust or a wet exhaust. Dry exhaust is like a car, no water going through the exhaust manifold. The exhaust pipe is hot, there is usually vented above the boat instead of through the hull. They are usually used on racing style boats (ie drag boats with striaght pipes are common) A wet exhaust, water cools the exhaust manifold, and is usually sprayed into the exhaust a couple inches from exhaust manifold. This allows used of a rubber hose to vent the exhaust through the hull.
Coast guard requires a flash arrestor on carburator engines, a piece of window screen will meet this requirement though. Nothing says you have to use a carb, fuel injection works just as well in a boat.
As for you gearbox, (transmission) the typical propeller will caviate and loose effieciency long before a engine will redline. Usually a set gear ratio is used to match optimum prop rpm with optimum engine rpm . Most boat use a set pitch, set diameter prop, with either is good for top end or for acceleration. Variable pitch props are out there but are expensive.
Also, marine engines do not run backward, on multiple engine boats the direction of props is changed in the gearbox.
Why not coolant to lake water intercoolers? And do away with running to cold. Drop an auto radator in a box with lake sea water circulating thru it? Aluminium will not work for this but copper and brass will. Exhaust water manifolds can crack where you cannot see it and run water into the stopped engine open exhaust valve. Modern 400 hp 400 lb ft LS-2 corvette engine will be a real firecracker engine with out salt ot lake water in it ans storage with coolant won't be a problem. PT boats had silencers that made there engines almost slient.Pratical use of automobile engines in boats ? what are the differences for rust, corrosion protection?
You would have to have more then just a simple clutch mechanism due to the fact that marine engines generally run much higher RPMs then your typical engine. If you were using something like one of those smaller personal watercraft vehicles, then a V-8 would provide way too much power. You would need to be belted in just to keep your seat. Something smaller like the K22 out of a Honda would be better. It is already set to hit the 10k RPM mark.
marine engines are designed to run all day at 4200 rpm .car engines are not ,cars have gears to allow a variation of revolutions per minute, they cannot take the pounding .of constant pressure. marine engines have metal timing gears and chains ,heavy duty bearings through out ,and brass freeze out plugs , with a heavy duty cam .. a marine 350 c.i. is usually 260 h .p. a car or truck is usually at best180 h.p. Major difference in performance ...you can run a boat engine in a vehicle ,but do not put a vehicle engine in a boat .unless you like to hear it go BANG!!!!!!Pratical use of automobile engines in boats ? what are the differences for rust, corrosion protection?
Go for it...
Consider a heat exchanger for closed loop cooling...antifreeze in a water bath. You need zincs on the block and drive shaft to control Galvanic corrosion. Swap the car manifold for a Marine manifold(ebay) which pumps water into the exhaust leaving the boat. Do the flame/spark arrestor thing and convert to sparkless starter/alternator/ignition. Make sure there is a good air path to the air intake. It's also a good idea to vent the engine compartment before attempting a startup. Make sure you don't have so much HP that it will flip on its side as the prop bites. OUCH!!!
Consider an old Berkley or Jacuzzi jet drive designed to bolt right to GM blocks.
I had a Berkley on an old Olds 455 in a Cigarette LaBaron(21ft) and it just rocked! Good luck.
you also have to have a spark proof starter and alternator and a flame arrestor for the air intakecatalytic converter

Do pontoon boats use less gas than a traditional boat?
I am looking for a boat that can seat 6 people. No big water. Just Erie canal use. Looking for an outboard aluminum boat for short cruises up and down the canal with the family. I have no clue as to MPG on any style of boats.Do pontoon boats use less gas than a traditional boat?
No pontoon boats don't use less gas. If that was the case, a pontoon boat would move though the water easier that a traditional boat of the same size and weight, with the same hp motor. As far as your motor, A 60hp motor at wide open throttle would burn 6 gallons an hour. Of course if your doing short trips you wont burn no where near that. Idling around and half throttle will burn a less gas.Do pontoon boats use less gas than a traditional boat?
There not energy efficient but are wide and for more people some have large engines and can cruise at 30 MPH. All depending on what your going to use it for.

Do they ever use boats in American sewerage system?
I need detail for a story - in USA sewers, could it be conceivable to find a boat. I know that sewers can be quite immense, with waterfalls and stairways, balconies and pits for catching rubbish or Gross Pollutant Traps.
But might one find a small boat?
Might utility guys they use them for working in the sewers?
Or even Sewer Tours? (I know that sounds gross, but some cities have them!)Do they ever use boats in American sewerage system?
I live in Ireland and our sewerage system is lots of small interlinking pipes :( But I also heard that about american sewerage systems.
It wouldn't surprise me if their was, as maintenance would be regular down there incase a blockage occurred or a person went missing. This is actually a really good question (star)
-CianDo they ever use boats in American sewerage system?
I think its entirely possible for maintenance purposes. If there was a rescue or looking for a dead body but generally most municipalities have sealed sewer piping until treatment plant.Do they ever use boats in American sewerage system?
Never heard of such a thing.

How do you prevent barnacles from attaching to alluminum pontoon boat used in salt water and brakish water?
I have a new Avalon Pontoon Boat which has been in salt water for one month. I pulled it out recently and found a considerable amount of baricles attached to the pontoons and the motor. What can I use to reduce or prevent this problem. I used a pressure washer to remove as many of the barnicles from the engine and pontoons, but portions of the pontoons can not be reached while on the trailer. Even after powerwashing with straight water, there is a roughness to the pontoons. What can be done to remove the roughness and coat the pontoons. How do you prevent barnacles from attaching to alluminum pontoon boat used in salt water and brakish water?
+ first you need to get all of the barnacles off. If that means jacking up the pontoon boat from the trailer one section at a time then that's what you have to do. Be really careful, and place safety blocks and dun age where you can so that there is no danger of having it fall on you or getting stuck. Next you need to clean the portion of the boat to as smooth as you can get it. The smoother the surface the better. I have seen people use a good quality paste wax to make it smooth and I have seem sail boat racers use a coat of soap to smooth the bottom and prevent barnacles but they are very temporary solutions as barnacles are pervasive. The longest lasting solution is the use of a good marine bottom paint at least two coats. Even that will not last a whole season. Interlux and Petit are the ones I have tried so far.
Good Luck, work safe, and
Happy Holidays
Once you get it clean and ready to apply bottom paint, make sure the bottom paint is for alluminum hulls. Normal bottom paint will speed the corrosion of your hull. How do you prevent barnacles from attaching to alluminum pontoon boat used in salt water and brakish water?
Here's a marine paint site:
http://www.ship2shoremarine.com/what-is-鈥?/a>
Antifouling bottom paint is necessary, be sure it is for aluminum. If it is left for a time in warm weather it will get some anyway. We (in the Chesapeake, brackish)have the worst problem on the shaft and prop, metal, so maybe they like better. When the boat is out of the water, power wash. How do you prevent barnacles from attaching to alluminum pontoon boat used in salt water and brakish water?
The glue left behind by the barnacles will come off with fine ( 180 or better) wet and dry sandpaper.
ridenicely has a point which I want to emphasize:
the only thing that keeps barnacles off a boat is anti-fouling bottom paint.
Period.
almost all anti fouling bottom paint is copper based.
copper based paint in salt water will, by electrolysis, eat the aluminum hull of your boat in weeks. No kidding. Massive damage in no time
You must either use an anti fouling especially designed for aluminum, or
use many many many layers of primer and barrier coat first.
Paint is a system. A specific paint is meant to go with specific primer.
Read the cans!
get it clean...very clean. then find a quality "anti-fouling" paint. even then you will still get a few, but not covered in them.
I just saw this question on a pontoon boat forum. Maybe it was you. If not, go to www.pontoon.net and go to the forums. Then either do a search or go to the general forum. It should be on the first or second page of threads. BTW, it's great forum. Good luck!alpinestars

I would like to buy a used Bowrider but I don't know a thing about boats. How should I test drive the boat?
What do I need to look for in the trailer? How should I test it on the water? What manuevers should I do and what to look for?
What should I expect from noise, engine looks and general condition on a test ride? What questions should I ask the owner/ broker about the boat, etc??
Thanks for you help!
DavidI would like to buy a used Bowrider but I don't know a thing about boats. How should I test drive the boat?
Ask the owner or broker to take your for a ride. Ask them to show you what it can do. Does the boat perform the way you intend to use it? Hire a yacht surveyor to inspect the boat for you. Use the survey as a bargaining tool to lower the asking price if you still like the boat.I would like to buy a used Bowrider but I don't know a thing about boats. How should I test drive the boat?
I agree with Tom except for the part about the owner or broker taking you for a ride... because that's exactly what might happen. The surveyor is an important part of the process. Make sure that your survey includes the hull AND mechanical aspects of the boat (a hull survey doesn't tell you if the engine works). Realize that add-on like small kicker or electric motors probably won't be covered in the survey. If at all possible, once the boat passes survey, try and find a boater in the know about boats similar to the one your looking at to come along for the wet test. Any reasonably good mechanical type can look at the trailer to see if it's up to snuff (bearings, wiring and general overall condition). Depending on where you live, certain roadworthy conditions may need to be met.I would like to buy a used Bowrider but I don't know a thing about boats. How should I test drive the boat?
Like Tom said, a surveyor is the best bet. Look in the yellow pages or ask at your local marina. It's like using a home inspector or taking a used car to a mechanic for an inspection before you buy it. If you don't use a surveyor, then get the seller to take you out in the boat and show you how all the switches work and what they do, how to trim the motor for best performance, etc. Try driving the boat yourself, including off and back onto the trailer. Try docking it. Turn on all the lights and leave them on to see if they trip the circuit breakers (or blow any fuses). If you take it out on a calm day then bounce it over your own wake a few times to see how it handles or if anything rattles or if any circuit breakers pop or if the fuel guage fluctuates a lot. If you're buying it based on it's ability to hit a certain speed, then test it with a handheld GPS - boat speedometers are not very accurate. Does it have an electric fishing motor on the bow? Make sure you test that as well. Does it have a bilge pump with a float control? Put a couple of buckets of water in the bilge to test the pump. Check the trailer tires and lights. Check the wheel bearings - do they have "bearing buddies" so they can easily be greased? Jack up the trailer and check if the wheels spin easily or if the bearings are seizing up.
What should I expect from noise, engine looks and general condition on a test ride? What questions should I ask the owner/ broker about the boat, etc??

What is the largest boat size that can be used?
What is the largest boat size and most powerful engine that can be used without a boat license? Is insurance needed for those boats? I will useit mainly on a lake. Best Answer will be chosenWhat is the largest boat size that can be used?
Go to the link below... Look up the state where you live and plan to boat... Since you didn't mention what State you live in - no one can give you the correct answer - but the link below will tell you your boat and motor size limit and the license you need. Insurance may not be needed - depends on whether or not you want to risk the financial loss on your own, and what Lake, Marina, etc. requiremnts are where you are using your boat. For a small boat, with a small engine, (that requires no boat license) however, insurance will probably either not be avaliable or will cost less then $100 a year.
But, my question is, why don't you just get a boat license? It is not rocket science... it just takes good common sense... and some rules of the road safety knowledge, which you need to know anyway.
All you need to know however (including boat license course) is at the link below.
Happy and Safe Boating! What is the largest boat size that can be used?
Since you gave no info as to where you are no body can say for sure. All states allow any "Trailerable" boat onto most lakes. There are exceptions though for size and engine. Some states do required an operator to have a "Boaters Safety" license in possession for operation, but most states don't. You'll have to check with the state DMV, local sheriff's department or the lake's marina. It's advisable to have insurance in place. In the event of an accident, you'll most likely be covered. If you don't have it, and you're sued, well that family with the loss "OWNS" you. As marine insurance covers your boat for "HazMat" clean up if the boat sinks and spills the fuel/oils into the water. In the event that you're stopped by law enforcement, you'll need to show proof of insurance just like drive on the road. What is the largest boat size that can be used?
it depends on which state you boat in. the rules in washington state regarding boat registration and boaters license are as follows
Vessels that are less than 16 feet in length and have a motor of 10 horsepower or less and are used on non-federal waters only do not need to be registrated.
some lakes have their own restrictions (like no gas powered motors)
there may also be different laws for your boaters license and registration of your boat.
Washington鈥檚 mandatory boater education law will eventually require all Washington recreational motorboat operators to carry a Boater Education Card, which shows that they have completed a basic boater education course. This applies to operators 12 years and older operating any type of vessel powered by 15 horsepower or more
if you let us know what state you are in we can give you the rules, or check your state laws.
yes you should have insurance. boating accidents can occur and insurance will help pay for medical or property claims. there are also large costs involved in enviromental cleanup and insurance help pay those costs also.
hope this helps

I'd like to buy a 18-24' used boat--maybe an open bow or possibly a cuddie cabin. How do boat mfg. rate?
looking for a used boat. Boating is new to me..and I'd like to know the better manufacturers from the weaker onesI'd like to buy a 18-24' used boat--maybe an open bow or possibly a cuddie cabin. How do boat mfg. rate?
Well if you don't know much about boats and are looking to buy one, you can go to Nada and get a "Average" price of what you are looking at to see what the value should be.
http://www.nadaguides.com/home.aspx?l=1%26amp;鈥?/a>
Of couse the condition of the hull, engine and other wear and tear come into play also and it may be worth your effort to take the boat to a marina and have a mech. go and do a checkout of it, they will charge you for the time, but it may be better than paying a lot for a piece of junk.
Also make sure you get a boat for what you want to use it for, don't get a river boat for the ocean or a lake boat for the river...
If you have other questions, drop a note.
depends on the use. whatever you do, go with an outboard engine! you will not be sorry. that will be your greatest differentiation in a boat. if you are not fishing offshore, dont get overly caught up in the manufactures name. most of the well known, and some lesser known, names build perfectly good boats. i have been around boats most of my life and owned 19 to 33 ft. i can honestly tell you that almost all cuddies in that size range end up being used as storage and nothing more. the most functional boat i ever owned was a 19 ft. center console with a t-top and130 hp yamaha. it was great for running about, economical, easy to trailer, great for skiing, fishing and diving. had nice cushions for the bow for lounging. good luck and enjoy.I'd like to buy a 18-24' used boat--maybe an open bow or possibly a cuddie cabin. Hi me and my partner have just got into boating we have brought a shakespear snipe for some reason alot of people recommend them or you could invest your money into a dory (fishing/ day boat) if you get them second hand you could strip it all down and make it your own personal boat, remember you need a permit and insurance before you could put ur boat on the sea in boating season out of season some areas may not be needed good luck with your hobbie
Stay away from used Bayliners, made cheaply to begin with.
Laurajayne, what type of permit are you talking about...no such thing in Georgia or Fla?I'd like to buy a 18-24' used boat--maybe an open bow or possibly a cuddie cabin. How do boat mfg. rate?
Used Donzi, Sea Ray, Viking usually are in good condition.
Don't pay any attention to Bayliner.

We Have a 20 ft Well-craft cuddy (Suncruiser 2000) With the Camper section that we use Regularly, it is perfect for staying out all weekend, 302 V-8 and cruises at about 25 MPH and 41 wide open, according to GPS.
Do a search for checkmate boats.
They have been building boats since 1967 and still going strong.
When it comes to buying your first boat, there are alot of circumstances you have to take into account. First and foremost how much disposable cash do you have. This will determine what make and size you want. Other than that i would suggest you purchase a Sea Ray!! There is a big change between 19'-20'. A good conditioned 19' would suit you perfectly. you could learn to tow, launch, retrieve, and all basic boating techniques very nicely with this boat. Last factor would be resale for your next boat in the bigger size, and sea ray has the highest resale value of any boat out there. Go sea ray young man, you'll never be sorry.
a boater myself the only advise I have for you is buy something that feels good and "you" like. The rest will be all pleasure.p411

Does anyone know of a UK retailer for inflatable pontoon fishing boats?
I've seen a lot of these dual-hulled inflatable pontoon boats used in America for fly fishing and i'm interested in getting one for my father's birthday.
They're also know as catarafts i think or as a variation of float tubes. They have two inflatable bladders with a seat suspended between and a bar to rest your feet on and they make great inflatable fishing boats. I can see plenty for sale in the US but none in the UK.
Are there any businesses out there shipping these to the UK?Does anyone know of a UK retailer for inflatable pontoon fishing boats?

What were the two boats that Lewis and Clark used on there expedition?
Don't know if they were named but the main Ohio and Missouri River transportation that the Corps used was a 55 foot Keelboat, which could be sailed, rowed, poled like a raft, or towed from the riverbank. In addition to the Keelboat, two wooden row boats called Pirogues were taken to hold men and supplies.
Can a RC Boat be used in a Swimming pool chlorinated with a salt system?
Many manufactures of RC boats say "Do not use in salt water".
Does this apply to a swimming pool chlorinated with a salt system? The salt is broken down into chlorine. Can a RC Boat be used in a Swimming pool chlorinated with a salt system?
You shouldn't have any problem. Just make sure you rinse the boat with fresh water after using in salt water. Salt water will cause metal parts to corrode faster than fresh water.
Good luck with your RC boat.
You will be fine. Just perform the after run maintenance that the manual suggest. Clean it, take care of it and you will be fine.
yeah why not, water is water, unless ur boat uses some kind of organic salmon based propulsion system that works by filtering pure water.... tut tut tut think about it
The salinity of a salt water generated pool is in the 2500- 3500 ppm range. If you're Julia Child and an excellent cook, you might taste it. The salinity isn't corrosive to pool heaters or ladders and such, so ought to be just fine for that RC boat, even if it is water cooled like mine is.Can a RC Boat be used in a Swimming pool chlorinated with a salt system?
If the WATER tastes salty, don't put the RC boat in it. But if the water tastes like fresh water, it is OK for the RC boat.

What things do you check for when buying a used boat?
want to buy a boat but i've never owned one before and don't know what to check for when buying a used boat. What things do you check for when buying a used boat?
Take the boat for a 1/2 HR boat ride, with at least 10 min at speed. Then look at everything closely. But, remember you are buying used. If you were selling something you have like a car, is it perfect? In used boats the value is in the money. Good Luck!
you have some good answers here. 1, have them take you for a test drive and show you how it works. 2, after 15 minutes of driving the boat, have them start it, and turn it off a few times...this way you wont get stranded on a lake. 3,check the floor, and see if you can find any soft spots. 4,check the seatsand carpet, if the boat was takin care of properly, it will look new, if the seats and carpet looks bad...more then likely the whole boat was takin care the same way. now what kind of boat do you want to buy!? you dont need one with a cubby cabin, big boats cost to much to maintain. get something about 16 foot to start with, something you can park in your driveway, and you can put in and take out of the water...bigger boats you have to store for the winter, and pay for marina docking...thats about $2000 for the summer, and $1500 for the winter. you want to go with an outboard motor "easier to work on. most important " dont rush to buy any boat, shop around...now is the best time to get good deals on boats, winter is coming, and if someone is asking $5000 for a boat...offer them $3500. but ask them to take you for a test drive before low balling them. and if they say the boat needs a part that only cost $100 and it will run fine...RUN! its a red flag if they say anything about needing a part thats cheap, if it was they would have put it on!What things do you check for when buying a used boat?
its like buying a car. you dont want one with too many miles. but with a boat its hours.
have a mechanic check the boat out well worth the moneyWhat things do you check for when buying a used boat?
check if it floats
three deal-breakers:
1. motor with bad compression
2. soft transom
3. no title
get it surveyed by a professional in the marine industry first is my suggestion
TAKE IT FOR A TEST DRIVE! Run a compression test. make shure boat is Solid.

Buying a used boat, what does this mean? Motor starts but shifter cables stuck, no forward or reverse?
This is a used 1999 power boat with a 115HP outboard motor. I'm trying to get an idea how much repair work will be needed to fix the cables and what it will probably cost me.Buying a used boat, what does this mean? Motor starts but shifter cables stuck, no forward or reverse?
If you have not bought it already, ask the owner if you can have it taken to a marine mechanic of your choosing. You of course will have to pay to bring it there and back and pay for marine mechanic shop.
If the owner refuses to, walk away from the boat with no second thoughts. This would be a big red flag that he/she is hiding something if they refuse to have a marine mechanic inspection of the boat at your expense.
A simple requirement of taking a boat to be inspected can save you thousands of dollars and spare you from buying a very big lemon that has a money black hole in the middle.
You could be in for a big expense or just one part to replace. The power cables tend to get beaten up every season. More so if you are on the salt water I think any way because of the rust and corrosion factor. You need to see it get the info on it model make etc...
Price out what the cost is for a new cable by making a trip to the marine store. They can tell you more.
My dad is retired and loves puzzles so figuring out what wires are good in the power cables and running new ones from the console to the motor etc... is fun for him it may not be for you.Buying a used boat, what does this mean? Motor starts but shifter cables stuck, no forward or reverse?
You did not tell what outboard you have there.
Check out there is no other issue on the outboard not shifting before the actual buy.
Does it shift with the cable not attached?
Depending on how the cable is routed in the boat it is not hard to do. The cable is probably from teleflex and the length should be printed somewhere on the outer cable.
Google teleflex for prices and cources

take the cowl off and find the shift cables and spray them penetrating oil let sit for a few minutes and try to move them they will loosen up
when you get them to move put marine grease on the cables were they slideBuying a used boat, what does this mean? Motor starts but shifter cables stuck, no forward or reverse?
DO NOT BE FOOLISH! YOU have NOT bought this boat and already something wrong.
Think about it? Current owner did not even have it repaired, WHY?
That means that person has sold his or her problem to you for little or nothing. So on their part it wasn't a total loss-sometimes you may get a really good deal.

Looking for black spongy mop w/silver handle used for washing cars/boats!?
I'm trying to find out what the name of this thing is called so I can find it for someone for Christmas. It is a mop/sponge used for cleaning cars or boats. The mop part is black and circular. I've found circular car washing tools but the one I'm looking for has sponge like strip pieces coming out of the center, not mop like strings. It had an adjustable silver handle as well. PLEASE HELPPPPPP!!!Looking for black spongy mop w/silver handle used for washing cars/boats!?

Quite a few boats used the 350 as well as the Ford 302. Correct Craft used both of those. Another marine application was the Chevy 150 4 cylinder. That was a strong running little engine.
In a tractor, the engine is really part of the frame. An automotive engine would be too difficult to adapt, and also wouldn't be strong enough. Modified pulling tractors do use automotive V8's, but usually 3 or more! Those aren't really tractors anymore though.
Tractors to my knowledge did not use the GM small blocks. OMC %26amp; Mercruiser have been using GM engines for at least 40+ years. As far as production numbers it's anyone's guess.

What radio wavelength is used for remote controlled toy cars, planes, boats etc?
Radio waves. Most RC toys operate at either 27 MHz or 49 MHz. This pair of frequencies has been allocated by the FCC for basic consumer items, such as garage door openers, walkie-talkies and RC toys. Advanced RC models, such as the more sophisticated RC airplanes, use 72-MHz or 75-MHz frequencies. What radio wavelength is used for remote controlled toy cars, planes, boats etc?
It will usually tell you the exact frequency on the back of your remote.

What glue can be used for attaching a rubber fender to a wooden boats gunnels?
I used West Systems epoxy to attach them to Boston Whalers. I would use West Systems Six 10 epoxy in a tube if I was doing it today. That is in addition to screwing them in every couple of feet. I used c clamps to hold them in place while it set up.What glue can be used for attaching a rubber fender to a wooden boats gunnels?
Ive affixed neopreme rubber to an epoxy coated steel structure on my ship. This is for chafing (rubbing) gear on a boat davit. This is a high impact, frequently abraided site. The product I used was called "Marine Goop" I have used in on two different ships and the stuff is holding after 5 years. When I applied it, I ensured the temperature range was within the manufacturers instructions and I clamped it along its entire length while the glue dried. I also scratched up both surfaces to ensure the glue had something to hold on to.What glue can be used for attaching a rubber fender to a wooden boats gunnels?
You'll need a mechanical fastener, too- screws or bolts. I use 3M's 5200, but that stuff is no joke- it takes an act of God to get it off once it bonds. What glue can be used for attaching a rubber fender to a wooden boats gunnels?
I would recommend a marine epoxy.

What cars use a GM 3.0 4 cylinder engine? This engine was also used in boats with an OMC outdrive.?
We have Forklifts with them....
But cars did NOT get the 3.0 version, it IS the same as the 2.5L "Iron Duke" engine..Note the valve cover, same as the valve cover on the small block V-8!
I have seen the 2.5 ID engine in a `94 Lumina, and earlier in the Citation. They did not go into the Cavalier and Corsica however.
Some early ones were used in 4 cylinder Novas in the `60`s.What cars use a GM 3.0 4 cylinder engine? This engine was also used in boats with an OMC outdrive.?
mdmcbert is correct, lots of industrial apps for these motors
No actually the Chevy nova had it for years, I actully have one in my boat that is 22 years old I'm replacing, and according to GM it's been around longer than any other boat motor on the stern drive. The Largest I4 that gm makes now is the 2.9L used in the canyon, and Colorado
Need more / or correct info. 2.5 (151 CID) was the standard 4 banger for a long time. 2.2 and 2.4 and now a 2.7 (HHR) are the norm in the GM line up. I'm not sure about boat motor liter sizes but if it was a 3.0 liter engine in it most likely is a V-6.
There is no such thing as a GM 3.0 4 cylinder engine. A 3.0 is a V6, as is a 2.8. The 2.8 is the 6 cyl that came in the camaros and firebirds. The 4 cylinder engines are the 2.0, 2.2, 2.3 and 2.4 engines. Also, the 2.5 Iron Duke is a 4 cylinder. What cars use a GM 3.0 4 cylinder engine? This engine was also used in boats with an OMC outdrive.?
i do believe the 3.0 was also the standard engine on the 82-84 Chevy camaro and firebird.when gm decided to casterate the cars by giving them 4 bangers for power plants the V6 and V8's were optional equipment..

Sell them with the antenna. That way it is a complete package. You can hook it up to 12 volts and show that it works also. Try listing them on craigslist under boats. I have sold many marine items there. Good luck!Would it be better to sell a marine radio with or without the boat antenea? how to sell used radio?
you may have better luck selling them separately as antennas tend to be specific to the boat but almost any radio will fit any boat.Would it be better to sell a marine radio with or without the boat antenea? how to sell used radio?
With!
Do you have the ENTIRE antenna, including the BALL MOUNT or do you just have the 8 foot long whip and nothing more. If you have the MOUNT too, then you can sell the COMPLETE antenna for about $10 at a flea market. Marine antennas tend to DE LAMINATE after a few years and internally they get a bit flakey so there aren't really worth that much. As for the radios, a NEW one is only about $100 and will have all the digital location features, so an OLD USED BOAT RADIO would bring MAYBE $10 at a flea market because anyone who knows anything at all about boats knows that boat radios are only good for about 3 or 4 years because of corrosion. If you try to sell them at a flea market.. $15 to $20 would be a good price to ask for a Radio/Antenna combination. Personally, I would NEVER buy a used radio or antenna because when you need a radio on the water, IT'S USUALLY IMPORTANT.. and I want something that I can rely on
You DO KNOW that you can't LEGALLY use a marine radio on DRY LAND.. right? It's not CB and the FCC and Cost Guard gets really excited when someone tries to use a marine radio at home. It can cost you up to a $5000 FINE and 5 YEARS IN JAIL.. type of serious. The DRUG RUNNERS use marine radios on the highway when they are making their runs, so when the FCC ENFORCEMENT people pick p a marine radio being used on land, they automatically assume it's a DRUG RUNNER and act accordingly.. you do know that... Right?car stereo

Check at book stores that may have them, or your local newspapers.Where can I find prices for used boats?
I would check eBay. eBay allows you to sort out the type of boat you want, the size, the year, and gives you a choice of a slot price you're looking for. eBay also allows you to see all types of fishing boats with their accessories and pictures. It really helps out if you see the boat first, so I would suggest buying within your state. I purchased a boat off eBay a few months ago and I made sure to visit the boat before making a bid. It takes some coordination between you and the owner, but if any owner really wants to sell his/her boat and is truthful, they'll gladly meet you with about the boat. Good luck!
You can check the many boating and fishing magazines in the back of the magazine. You can go online and go to boat manufacturers and see if they have a section on used boats for sale. also try your local boat store, because they will probably sell used boats. good luckWhere can I find prices for used boats?

Where is a good place to buy used wakeboarding boats?
Depending on where you live check out your local boat dealerships. They have great factory trade ins that are in great shape and you know everything is mechanically sound. Where ever you go, make sure you get the boat inspected just like a car. Top to bottom, or thats where you will end up.
Is there something similar to carfax for boats?
I'm am buying a used boat and wanted to know if there is a service like carfax but for boats. Is there something similar to carfax for boats?
There is, but unlike the the cars there is no organized reporting system. They have information that is public record, and some insurance information but have nothing on the vast majority of boats. When you buy a used boat, simply don't do it unless you take the boat for a test run, and bring it up to speed for 20-30 minutes. If you are not familiar with boats, ask someone you know who is or hire a mechanic to go along. If you are spending a lot of money, $30k or more have the boat surveyed. Under that amount it cost $500 or more for the survey, and what you learn is often marginally beneficial. It's to your best interest to take the time to look at everything. Good Luck!Is there something similar to carfax for boats?
There is a company called boathistoryreport.com that is the equivalent of carfax for watercrafts. Boat History Report runs their reports similar to carafax. You can run a history report and see if a boat has been in an accident, salvaged, submerged, seized, has an environmental lien, etc. It is a very valuable resource if you are in the used boat market.

What type of boats are mostly used for cage diving?
These boats are often custom designed "dive boats", which are one of a kind. There are no particular design or maker. However they are ocean going and a bit larger than typical dive boats.

What are the details for the buyers 3-day return grace period pertaining to the sale of a used boat in Calif?
My brother sold his boat, the guy used it for a day, and now wants his money back. How legal is that? What are the details for the buyers 3-day return grace period pertaining to the sale of a used boat in Calif?
Should be the same as a car sale in CA and everywhere else. The three day right of reciscision is on HOME SOLICITED SALES only. This was intendend to protect people who bought Kirby Vacuum Cleaners from the door to door guys! Unless your brother committed fraud in the course of the sale, that guy is an OWNER.

Should I finance a used boat purchase with my 0% interest rate credit card or get a loan from a bank at 10%?
I am contemplating purchasing a used boat which is over 15 years old. I am looking at the best way to finance this purchase and need some input. The only loan I have is a student loan for $4K and the only credit card I have has a balance of $11K with 0% interest for the next 6 months, and then a 8% rate after that. I have a few other credit cards which send me access checks with 0% fee and interest for one year that I could use to finance the boat. I would use $11K in an access check to finance the boat at 0% interest on a second credit card which would increase my credit card debt to $22K with 0 interest for awhile and then 8% on both eventually. However, I believe I can pay off these cards before any interest kicks in. The second option is to get a boat or personal loan for the $11K and pay about 10% interest. I would intend to pay the loan as quickly as possible as well. My question is, should I finance the boat using $11K of credit card at 0% interest or get a bank loan?Should I finance a used boat purchase with my 0% interest rate credit card or get a loan from a bank at 10%?
I did the credit card thing on my used car...my rate was 4.9%...it was cheaper tjhan a used car loan. Consider this make sure your rate is not a variable rate and make sure you are never late on payments because your interest rate can go up to 30% with one late payment! remember you can alwys do a balance transfer if you get a better credit card offer in the mail!Should I finance a used boat purchase with my 0% interest rate credit card or get a loan from a bank at 10%?
IF you can pay of the credit card before it accrues any interest, I would go that route rather than a bank loan at 10%. I would concentrate on paying off all my debt before I went and bought a boat though.Should I finance a used boat purchase with my 0% interest rate credit card or get a loan from a bank at 10%?
If i were you i will use credit card to pay for the boat why pay more for the interest. 8% is still less then 10%.

How come when people are selling their boats, they always say the porta-potty was never used?
I find that so hard to believe. Do they lie...or do most people take their dumps in the water? How come when people are selling their boats, they always say the porta-potty was never used?
WOW... I never really thought of it... but you are absolutely right. It's kinda like all those fruitcakes at Christmas... everyone seems to either give them or get them - but no one seems to ever eat them...
Now, I don't have a "porta-potty" on my boat... I have a full size Marine head that both flushes and incinerates... but, before that, I had a regular marine head, and the problem was the "smell"...
and quite frankly, (unlike the other guy) if a porta potty is all I had, I would sure use it, before I would jump in the same water and tread water with it...
But, porta-potties are cheap... if I had one of those smelly things on a boat I was trying to sell, I would certainly toss it, and put in a new one for the prospective buyer... so, maybe, it hasn't been used after all.

If you have ever tried to use one in a boat --you will soon just jump over board and let fly. The porta pottie was designed much like the reserve in a parachute-- things have to be pretty bad before you go there.

What to beware of when buying a used boat?
I seen some pics of decent boats online "25' powerboats" ranging from about $3,000- is this too cheap? They are saltwater boats with cuddy cabins, not performance boats, don't know what brand. Is there any pitfalls I should look out for? What if there are holes in the hull; any such thing as non-repairable damages? ThanksWhat to beware of when buying a used boat?
blisters are always a problem to look out for.
Then if its an I/O and has been used in salt. The
exhaust manifolds rot and can cost a LOT to get fixed.
$3000 can get you a nice boat or a piece of crap
just depends on what you find.
If your spending more, get a survey done of the boat. The money you pay for a survey is well worth it. Good luck
with any used boats your going to have problems just do your research but 3 grand seems kind of cheap to meWhat to beware of when buying a used boat?
Best advise...take it into the shop and have profession go through it before purchasing. We bought a used boat this summer through a private seller. It was sold to us "lake ready" and it have been dead in the water all summer. We have spend way too much money trying to get it to work properly. I wish we would have taken the time to have a professional run through it so we would have known what we were getting into.
We got taken advantage of...so do your homework and check out some boat forums for others experiences with the brand.

---GOT IT---What to beware of when buying a used boat?
Water in the bilge and type of construction of the cross members. Some are wood encased in fiberglass. Check the moisture and see if they are rotting already. Most $3,000 25 foot boats have been sitting out in rain. A moisture meter will be more than worth its cost.
Tap along the hull and check for weekspots. Both a change in sound when tapping, or the hull sinks in when pressed. Put your head close to the hull and look for ripples in the hull.
There's more but a not so obvious check is to see if the boat is underpowered. i.e., if you plan to use the boat often with 5 people then bring along 5 people for the test drive, and 1 to 3 more to simulate the weight of the boat when full of fuel. I bought a boat that flew when it was just me, my wife, and the dealer and almost no gas. But when we filled up the boat, we could not get it to plane.

How much do boat mechanics cost to evaluate a potential used boat purchase?

Need to know about buying used boat?
I just moved into a lakeside house that has a dock and I want to buy a motorboat. I've never owned a boat and really don't know anything about owning one. I've been looking at boats on Craigslist, because those are the only ones that seem to be in my price range (~$3000). What should I know about buying a used boat? What sorts of mistakes do first time owners/buyers make that I can avoid?Need to know about buying used boat?
People new to boating such as you should not divulge into looking on Craigslist for used boats.
You need to start at marinas and boat dealerships looking at used boats. Yes, some of them might be of poor service, rude, or not helpful, but they give good starting points.
The reason why is boat purchasing is NOT even close like buying an automobile. You can easily find issues wrong on an automobile with a mechanic inspection and inspecting it closely yourself.
Whereas a boat has so many countless locations where it can hide mechanical and structure issues. Structural fiberglass issues generally start at $1,000 and the sky is the limit depending on the left of rot/damage.
Not to mention there are a bunch of deceiving people who list I/O boats on Craigslist with mechanical issues with the engine block who know about it and not mention it. Engine block cracks from freezing damage is the #1 of them all (improper winterization or not at all).
You need to do some extensive research on the following:
What can I really afford??? You don't buy the boat alone. Boat price, regular maintenance, taxes, registration, gas, and major repairs all factor in.
What kind of boat do I really need??? Don't go buying a pontoon boat or fishing only boat with small engine if you intend on pulling any towables other than a tube regularly.
What kind of propulsion system do I want??? Outboard or inboard/outboard. Both have their strengths and drawbacks.
What is the regular maintenance needed on the particular type of boat and drive system I need?
What are the legal requirements for operating a vessel in the waters where you live??? If you live in the US, most states for most individuals born after 1985 require you must pass a boater education course and carry the ID with you at all times on the boat.
Do you know the boating laws and regulations fully for the area you intend on operating the vessel in?
Are you willing to fully commit to owning a boat by investing the time and effort to keep the boat and trailer in good running condition? If you answer no or hesitate on this question, you probably should not think about any boat purchase at this time until you can with certain honesty answer yes.

First of all, stay away from Craigslist, there are more crooks there than in prisons.
Go to a local marina, and ask the sales people questions. Of course they are going to try to sell you a boat, but they will also offer you good advice coming from years of experience. They may even have something to offer you in your price range. Contact your local Power Squadron, they offer courses in boating safety and navigation, and are experienced boaters who can also offer you advice concerning purchasing and maintaining your boat. You can also google local boating clubs, and forums for new boat owners. Take your time, and use your head to separate the wheat from the chaff.
Good luck, and happy floating.Need to know about buying used boat?
Like the answer above make sure you know it runs for sure before buying it. Check that there's no cracks anywhere and make sure all the controls on the boat work. And when looking on craigslist, look for a boat that has a pretty new engine or with low hours. You'll be paying a lot more to fix it then its actually worth if you get a crappy motor.
If you have never owned a boat and or in general know almost nothing about boats what you need to know is don't buy one. But if you dead set on buying one buy it like you would buy a car and have it inspected at a boat shop. A key phrase to ask when calling someone is "hows the transom"Need to know about buying used boat?
demand to see it run in the water to make sure it does run correctly. check for soft spots in floor. check the back by motor to be sure there are no cracks (transom)

How many hours is low for a used boat?
I want to buy a used boat and am wondering about the hours. What is high and what is low
? Thanks. How many hours is low for a used boat?
how it was maintained is more important in the long run.
i've seen boats with over 1,000 hours stil in good shape. and i've seen boats with less then 100 hours that were junk.
and then age is a consideration.
most boats are wood and fiberglass construction. no matter how well cared for, moisture works its way into the wood. and weakens it.
i've seen great looking older boats with the rear end rotted away. motor ends up ripping free, with some of the boat still attached to it.
a full day on the water for many boaters is only 4 or 5 operational hours. if you only go 6 times a week, thats 30 hours a year tops.
the only way to buy a QUALITY used boat is too:
1. water test it.
you dont buy a used car without taking it for a spin around the block. you shouldnt buy a boat that way. just because it starts up easily and ildes nicely on land, shifts into gears and everything doesnt mean it will work in the water.
and it doesnt mean it wont sink either.
2. mechanical inspection.
take it to a marine service center and have one performed. it will cost about $50-100. they will give the boat a full once over and test everything, including a compression test which will tell basic motor condition.
if you do both of those, and it passes on both, you will be buying a boat capable of providing many years of enjoyment.
IF properly maintained from that point on.
one more key thing to remember, when was its last service?
and how many hours/years has the impeller been in it?
impellers are the heart of the marine engine cooling system. if it fails, its very easy to blow the motor.
3 years or 100 hours. when in doubt of last replacement, change it.
before it fails and leaves you stranded on the water. possibly after overheating your motor to the point of failure. How many hours is low for a used boat?
recreational boat, not in commercial service...
50 hours per year is pretty low.
400 hours per year is pretty high. How many hours is low for a used boat?
It's how the boat shows boats that are abused with low hours are worth less than high hours with good maintenance.

take it to a marine service center and have one performed. it will cost about $50-100. they will give the boat a full once over and test everything, including a compression test which will tell basic motor condition.
if you do both of those, and it passes on both, you will be buying a boat capable of providing many years of enjoyment.
Is a bill of sale enough when purchasing a used boat?
Getting ready to purchase a used boat, but the owner has no title for the boat or trailer, and says the reason is because titles are not needed in Kansas, but the motor has a title because it was purchased in Missouri. Is this true that titles are not needed in Kansas? And is a bill of sale all the info I need to get from him?Is a bill of sale enough when purchasing a used boat?
i got a car with only a bill of sale it was a pain in the *** to get the title

A friend of mine's wife used to make a dish she called cheese boats. Has anyone heard of that?
She took a little roll and filled it with cheese mixed with a couple other ingrediants. Then baked them so that the roll was crispy and the cheese was melted. It was to die for, but I have not talked to anyone since who has heard of it, much less knows how to make them.A friend of mine's wife used to make a dish she called cheese boats. Has anyone heard of that?
Not knowing what the full ingredients are, I'm guessing on these...
Cheese Stuffed Pull-Apart
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1 can (7.5 oz) Pillsbury refrigerated buttermilk biscuits
10 cubes (3/4 inch) Cheddar, Monterey Jack or mozzarella cheese
3 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted
1/2 cup pizza sauce, heated, if desired
Heat oven to 375掳F. Spray 8-inch round pan with cooking spray. In small bowl, stir together Parmesan cheese and Italian seasoning.
Separate dough into 10 biscuits; flatten each to a 2-inch round. Place 1 cheese cube in center of each biscuit round. Bring dough up around cheese cube; press edge to seal and shape into a ball. Roll in butter, then in Parmesan cheese mixture. Place 1/4 inch apart in pan.
Bake 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown. Cool slightly; serve warm with pizza sauce.

Where to find a good used boat windshield?
I need a windshield for a Wellcraft Express cruiser. The boats 29ft with a 11 ft beam. Anyone have any suggestions or know where a good boat yard is that I can get one at?Where to find a good used boat windshield?
try www.anythingmarine.com
he has alot of stuff!Where to find a good used boat windshield?
ebay is where I find alot of stuff .Where to find a good used boat windshield?
I personally go to the Pacific Marine Exchange but not knowing resources of reader I'd suggest yellow pages
for retail sales. Harbors and boatyards in my experience don't have vessels you can knock apart for parts. Most of such things go to second-hand chandlery. Were I in India
my happy feet would hurry me to southeast coastline where ship breaking lands about everything you can think of ashore.mr tire

How are block and tackle used in boats?
what advantage do they give
what are they actually used for
please help with any information you know about the subject in general!!!How are block and tackle used in boats?
As mentioned before, mechanical advantage in pulling a line. Put more simply, blocks reduce the effort needed to pull a line regardless of that lines use. Each loop in a line...with blocks at each loop doubles the power of your pull.
A Block in particular, is a wood, metal or composite case which encases one or more sheives(the round wheel) for lines.
Block is singular.
Tackle is more than one block.
Tackle can be rigged either to advantage or dissadvantage.
A big name in boats for blocks is Harken. www.harken.comHow are block and tackle used in boats?
Block %26amp; tackle are use between 2 areas to increase the pulling pressue between them%26gt; Like a down haul on the mast to the boom%26gt; Or on the traveler on the boom%26gt;For control on a reach with the boom out over the side of the sail boat%26gt;%26gt;And the is only 1 rope on a boat it hanges from the bell%26gt;How are block and tackle used in boats?
good Mechanical engineers all.....not a sailor amonst them, however.
on a boat you use tackle for all kinds of things.
the outhaul of the main is a single block that pulls the bottom (foot) of the mainsail tight.
the vang is a 2-3 or 4 block tackle that pulls down on the main boom.
the vang is attached to the boom at one end and the Traveler at the other. The traveler is used to move the boom left and right WRT the boat centerline it may have 2 or 4 blocks depending on the size of the boom.
lastly you can use the boom while in port for lifting cargo on or off the boat. you would use tackle for that too.
wer
B+T (or 'purchase') are used to give mechanical advantage - in other words to make your pull more powerful. The word advantage carries a technical meaning in this context - the number of times the rope goes around the block and tackle, coupled with the direction that you pull tells you how many times you multiply your pull . There is no free lunch - the more the mechanical advantage (number of times the rope goes around) the slower your pull affects what you are pulling and the more friction there is to pull against. Used in many contexts on board a ship, usually to apply tension to something that needs to be really tight. Like the rope that pulls a sail up the mast (halyard). And of course many more examples....
